Healing Safely with Chi Nei Tsang
by Karen Pearle
I felt parts of my belly I didn't even know were there. Areas that were numb were coming back to life. How reassuring your voice becomes during the whole process, but especially when feelings come up and I'm crying, and you say all the right things and make all the right sounds, and it feels okay, you know, whatever is passing through, feels okay. And you say it's not your fault, it was too much for you to handle, and I find that I weep even harder, because I feel heard, the body feels heard, and it feels okay to no longer hold all that stuff, whatever all that is, and it feels okay to let it go now. ... I had a deep feeling of relaxation afterwards. " Patricia
Patricia came to see me because she had strong period pains in her lower abdomen that she had been experiencing for months (a condition that thousands of women are suffering from.)
She decided to try Chi Nei Tsang, a very sophisticated and updated abdominal massage which originated in China, centuries ago. Her body had sent her a clear symptom, a discomfort to draw her attention within.
Something was ready to emerge and heal and make room for freer and deeper connections with herself, something to lessen the stresses she had been feeling.
"I guess the massage helps to release a lot of the holding that I've been doing in that part of my body." We humans are incredible creatures with a great capacity to heal. And there is a vast world inside our abdomens to explore!!
Because of her pain, Patricia's attention was drawn to her abdomen- our ignored center. We carry a lot of baggage here in the way of tensions, which are holdings from experiences which happen in our lives that are hard to "digest." The body finds expert ways of holding them for us and, after years of holding them, they may harden and even become fibrous (fibroids).
Men and women come to see me for a wide variety of reasons, including depression, anxiety, and digestive distress. And now women, especially, are experiencing many reproductive and other personal issues- often the result of sexual abuse or threats, prohibitions about our sexuality, childbirth experiences, surgeries, illness or the stress of relationships.
"How surprisingly gentle the massage is - I'm surprised all over again each time, it's as if you handle that part of the body with supreme care, and I recognize how safe I feel."
Actually with Chi Nei Tsang, we learn to touch a person's abdomen in such a way that a person feels him or herself, more than the practitioner's hands.
We may know the story of what happened to us or we may have forgotten, but with Ch Nei Tsang we can gently release the grip of these tensions so we are no longer being affected by what happened. Then better functioning is restored to all the organs of the body, and, since every organ, every cell is connected, our total functioning improves.
For Patricia, reconnecting with her abdomen was getting a precious and profound part of herself back to life. Her energy was transformed into more creativity, confidence and an open hearted way of being in the world.
Now her choices are more governed by her feelings. So she doesn't have to rely too much on figuring out what she needs. Her abdomen has become a source of inner wisdom that she can trust.
