Relaxing the eyes can do wonders for the body!
You've probably done it without thinking... placed your hands over your eyes when you were excited, frustrated, fatigued, or have other strong feelings.
Our eyes are active all day and even in our sleep. Palming is one of the best ways to experience relief from stress and strain and to deeply rest our eyes and nervous system (the deepest system in the body).
How to Palm:
1. Rub your hands together to make them warm. Then close your eyes. Cover your eyes with your warm hands with your fingers partly interlaced on your forehead and rest your elbows comfortably on a table or desk.
2. Make sure your hands do not touch your eyelids.
3. Add a pillow under your elbows if more height is needed to keep your back relaxed and straight.
I like to lie on my back with a pillow on my chest and cover my eyes with my hands in that position.
4. Now you can imagine deep blackness (Many people see flashes of light, dots, etc. This indicates that the optic nerve is working overtime. ) If you cannot see black (it may take quite a while), then just imagine it or some other dark color. No need to struggle – just breathe more deeply and relax.
For how long do I palm? You can palm from 5 to 20 minutes or as long as you like. Try taking 5 minute rests from reading or working at the computer and palming.
Note: If you feel anxious during palming you can get used to it slowly- by palming for shorter periods. It’s good to know that many people feel this way.
Spend some time each day palming. It’s a great thing to do for your health and well-being!!
